Clean Living "Clean Living" (Vanguard Records, 1972) (LP)

This Boston-based folk-rock band came out of an earlier, harder-edged psychedelic group, opting in the early 'Seventies to go for a mellower, more humor-filled sound, including a few tracks such as their big hit, "In Heaven There Is No Beer," which were just waiting for a little airtime on The Dr. Demento Show, or any number of late-night free-form radio shows. The group's shofting membership included steel player Paul Lambert, rhythm guitarist Robert "Tex" LaMountain, bassist Frank Shaw, and singer/guitarists Norman Schell and Rick Tiven, They had a playful vibe, with plenty of good-natured, post-jug band eclecticism, in the same general impish wheelhouse as, say, The Holy Modal Rounders, though perhaps a little less interested in looking "weird" for the sake of being weird. Definitely worth a spin... (Also of interest: Tex Lamountain had a second (or third?) act in the late 'Seventies as an earnest coffeehouse folkie, most notably as a politically conscious, anti-nuclear eco-troubadour singing songs about Karen Silkwood, power plant meltdowns, unicorns and gardening. But it all starts here with the absence of alcohol in the promised land...)
