The Midnite Special "The Midnite Special" (Dave Kennedy Recording Studios, 1981)
An outlaw-ish band from Wisconsin, possibly from Racine or Milwaukee, featuring Mike Baker (lead vocals, lead guitar), Jeff Benner (rhythm guitar), Tom Hanson (bass), and John Johnson on drums... The repertoire includes plenty of 'Seventies classics, stuff from Willie, Waylon, JJ Cale and Charlie Daniels ("The South’s Gonna Do It Again," of course...) There's also an early Rodney Crowell song(!) giving them some contemporary hipster cred, though this is balanced by (groan) yet another cover of the ever-dreadful "You Gave Me A Mountain," a hammy ballad that just wouldn't die. Minimal liner notes, though the band also thanks Bob Rohner and Wally Schultz ("...and our friends at "Oh Johnnys") so there are a few breadcrumbs.
